Max J. Roberts,
Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Max Roberts is responsible for the leadership and management of Barnes & Noble College. Prior to joining us in 1996, he held senior executive positions at retailers including Petrie Retail, R.H. Macy & Company and May Department Stores, as well as the global public accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche. A Certified Public Accountant, he takes a hands-on, creative approach to business growth, and in his time here has nearly quadrupled the number of institutions we serve.
Patrick Maloney is president and currently oversees operations at all bookstores nationwide, including bookstore e-commerce, store design & construction, internal operations, learning and development, and book and general merchandising departments. He began his career at Barnes & Noble College as a student and assistant manager at SUNY Stony Brook University and was appointed to his current position in 2002.
Executive Vice President
Bill Maloney is executive vice president and is responsible for strategic planning and corporate marketing activities. He also oversees campus relations and is actively involved in building relationships with campus partners. Bill's vast experience in college bookstore management includes positions at C.W. Post College and Columbia University.
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Barry is vice president and chief financial officer and is responsible for all financial functions including accounting, inventory control, accounts payable, financial reporting, planning and analysis, and internal audit and actively participates on the leadership team. Barry joined Barnes & Noble College in 1986 and has held various financial executive positions with increasing responsibility. He was promoted to his current position in 2006. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble College, Barry worked for the international accounting firm of KPMG supervising audits for clients in various industries including retail, banking and cable TV. He is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and earned his B.B.A from Hofstra University New York.
Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer
Lisa provides strategic direction and executive oversight to our more than 725 campus stores in the areas of consumer and corporate marketing, learning and development and in-store and eCommerce strategy and operational efficiencies. Her deep fascination with delivering incredible retail experiences fuels her long-standing passion for understanding customer behaviors and designing the kind of innovations that create loyalty and stronger connections to the Barnes & Noble College brand. Under Lisa's leadership, today Barnes & Noble College connects with over 5 million students and faculty, creating an authentic dialogue that educates and informs each audience while simultaneously driving revenue at each campus store. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble College in 1996, Lisa held several senior-level management positions at Macy's, including roles in Store Operations, Process Re-Engineering, Distribution, Customer Service, and Learning and Development.
Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Stephen Culver is vice president and chief information officer and is responsible for overseeing the company's IT operations and strategic development. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble College in 2005, Stephen held leadership positions in both the private and public sectors. He owned and presided over an IT consulting company, which specialized in the retail and wholesale industries. As CIO of Giorgio Armani Corporation, he lead the IT operations during the development and expansion of their North American operations.
Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer
Joel Friedman is Vice President of General Merchandising and Store
Construction/Design at Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. He is responsible for the
development and implementation of merchandising strategy for the company as well as its
store design and construction group.
Joel has an extensive background in retail merchandising, product development and sourcing, as well as store management. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble in 1998, he was Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Sourcing for Capital Mercury, Senior Vice President Of Men's Wear and Children's Wear at Frederick Atkins, and for nineteen years worked for Federated Department Stores, holding senior management positions in merchandising and store operations at Jordan Marsh and Filene's.
Joel's responsibilities include the stewardship of the company's Code of Conduct program to secure a sweatshop-free assortment of all logo products for schools served by Barnes & Noble. Joel sits on the University Advisory Council of the Fair Labor Association, of which Barnes & Noble is a member.
Vice President of Human Resources
JoAnn directs the development, implementation and coordination of all human resource management functions, including employee relations, recruiting, benefits and compensation for our campus bookstores, field and home office personnel. She joined Barnes & Noble College in 2003 after serving as the Vice President of Human Resources for AT&T Broadband Media Services.
