Three Schools, One Store: Welcome to the University District Bookstore!

Camden LogosIt’s not every day that you walk into a campus bookstore and find sections for three different schools all under one roof, but such is the case for Barnes & Noble College’s newest bookstore – the University District Bookstore in Camden, New Jersey. The unique concept may be a first of its kind, but it’s a great idea that works for our students, faculty and campus community.

Three Schools – One Bookstore

The University District Bookstore serves as the campus bookstore for Rowan University-Camden, Camden County College, and Rutgers University-Camden. Located in the Camden Technology Center on the corner of Cooper Street and Broadway, the bookstore will serve as an anchor for the city’s growing university district corridor.

“This store is important for the area,” said Dan Knittel, bookstore manager. “It helps to build a relationship with the surrounding community. We have gotten a lot of foot traffic coming in to ask about our store. Each customer that I have spoken to has told us that there is a different feel to the store. They really like the changes we have made.”

The University District Bookstore is the first three-in-one (three schools in one location) bookstore for Barnes & Noble College. In 2006, Barnes & Noble College opened its first joint bookstore, the Wilkes-Kings Bookstore, which serves both King’s College and Wilkes University in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, to great success.

Summer Renovation

The existing bookstore was redesigned in February to create three distinct sections for each school. Each section includes the textbooks and spirit clothing that are unique to each institution. The bookstore also sells a large selection of trade books, gift items, greeting cards and snack foods. Plans have been made for a major interior renovation to begin over the summer.

“The decision was made to have the renovation take place over the summer to cause as little disruption to the students as possible,” said Joyce Armand, regional manager for Barnes & Noble College. “The renovation will also include a beautiful new café selling Starbuck’s products. We really want this bookstore to become a big part of the community.”
