Barnes & Noble Sponsors World Book Night

The Kite Runner

"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini is one of 30 books to be distributed on World Book Night.

Barnes & Noble is proud to be a participating sponsor of World Book Night, which will be held in various locations across the United States on April 23. The date corresponds to UNESCO’s International Day of the Book, chosen in honor of Shakespeare and Cervantes, both of whom died on April 23, 1616 (it is also Shakespeare’s birthday). The event is designed to spread a love of reading and books.

The campaign involves volunteers going out into the community to distribute free books to teen and adult readers.  At last year’s launch event in the United Kingdom, volunteers distributed more than 1 million free books. This year, World Book Night expands to the U.S., Ireland and Germany, with tens of thousands of volunteers participating.

Award-Winning Books to be Distributed

World Book NightThe book campaign features 30 compelling fiction and non-fiction titles that were chosen by a group of booksellers, including Barnes & Noble buyers, and librarians, that would appeal to a variety of readers and ages. Titles include Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany, and Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner.

Barnes & Noble will be giving away free editions to highlight their commitment to literacy, community and lifelong learning. All Barnes & Noble and 90 Barnes & Noble College bookstores will serve as pick-up locations for book “givers” (volunteers who will distribute the free books). Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen and other authors will participate in the April 23 launch event at the Union Square store in New York City.
